How Much Should A Yorkie Eat Per Day? Yorkie Feeding Schedule
Share
Most healthy adult Yorkies eat approximately ¼ to ¾ cup of dry food per day, depending on their weight and the number of calories in the food. A small three-pound Yorkie may need around ¼ to ⅓ cup, while a larger eight-pound Yorkie may need closer to ⅔ or ¾ cup. Yorkie puppies normally need three to four small meals per day, while healthy adults usually eat twice daily. Always check the calorie content on the food label, measure every portion, count treats, and adjust the amount according to your Yorkie’s weight, activity level, age, and body condition.
Knowing how much a Yorkie should eat per day can be surprisingly confusing. Yorkshire Terriers have tiny stomachs, but they can also have big appetites. Some Yorkies finish every meal in seconds, while others inspect every piece of kibble as if they are judging a cooking competition.
The correct Yorkie food portion depends on more than breed alone. Your dog’s weight, age, activity level, health, body condition, and the calorie density of the food all affect how much should go into the bowl.

Two dog foods can look almost identical but contain very different numbers of calories per cup. That is why a Yorkie feeding chart should be treated as a starting point rather than a strict rule.
In this Yorkie portion guide, we will explain:
- How much food a Yorkie should eat per day
- Recommended Yorkie portion amounts by weight
- How often to feed a Yorkie
- The best Yorkie puppy feeding schedule
- How to calculate calories and cups
- How treats affect the daily food allowance
- How to tell whether your Yorkie is eating too much or too little
Important: This guide is intended for generally healthy Yorkies. Dogs with diabetes, liver disease, pancreatitis, food allergies, digestive conditions, dental pain, unexplained weight changes, or a history of low blood sugar need an individual feeding plan from a veterinarian.

ToggleHow Much Should a Yorkie Eat Per Day?
Most healthy adult Yorkshire Terriers eat approximately ¼ to ¾ cup of dry dog food per day, divided into two meals.
The exact amount depends heavily on the Yorkie’s weight and the number of calories in one cup of food.
For example, a three-pound Yorkie eating a calorie-dense kibble may need only around ¼ cup per day. An active seven- or eight-pound Yorkie eating a lower-calorie formula may need closer to ⅔ or ¾ cup.
Many adult Yorkies require somewhere between 120 and 300 calories per day. However, dogs of the same weight may have different energy requirements. Age, activity, neuter status, body condition, and individual metabolism can all change the final number.

Recommended Daily Food Intake for Yorkies
The following Yorkie feeding chart provides broad starting estimates. The dry-food portions are calculated using food that contains approximately 400 calories per cup.
| Yorkie age or weight | Approximate daily calories | Recommended dry food per day* | Meals per day |
| 8–12-week-old puppy | Follow the puppy-food chart by current weight | Approximately ¼–½ cup | 4 meals |
| 3–6-month-old puppy | Follow the puppy-food chart by current weight | Approximately ⅓–¾ cup | 3 meals |
| 6–12-month-old puppy | Follow the puppy-food chart by current weight | Approximately ½–¾ cup | 2–3 meals |
| 3 lb adult Yorkie | 120–140 kcal | Approximately ¼–⅓ cup | 2 meals |
| 4 lb adult Yorkie | 150–175 kcal | Approximately ⅓–⅖ cup | 2 meals |
| 5 lb adult Yorkie | 180–205 kcal | Approximately ⅖–½ cup | 2 meals |
| 6 lb adult Yorkie | 205–235 kcal | Approximately ½–⅗ cup | 2 meals |
| 7 lb adult Yorkie | 230–265 kcal | Approximately ⅗–⅔ cup | 2 meals |
| 8 lb adult Yorkie | 255–295 kcal | Approximately ⅔–¾ cup | 2 meals |
*These food portions assume that the dry food contains around 400 calories per cup. If your Yorkie’s food contains more or fewer calories, the correct portion will be different.
Puppy portions are especially variable. Check the package instructions because puppy feeding charts often consider the puppy’s current age, current weight, and expected adult weight.
The numbers in this table are starting estimates. Your Yorkie may need a little more or less to maintain a healthy body condition.
How to Calculate Your Yorkie’s Daily Food Portion
The most accurate way to determine your Yorkie’s portion is to use the calorie information printed on the dog food package.
Look for a section labeled “Calorie Content.” It may show calories as:
- kcal per cup
- kcal per can
- kcal per pouch
- kcal per tray
- kcal per kilogram
AAFCO explains that pet food calorie information is normally provided in a calorie-content statement and that feeding amounts can be adjusted according to the individual animal’s needs.
Use this simple formula:
Daily calories needed ÷ calories per cup = cups of food per day
For example, suppose your Yorkie needs 180 calories per day and the food contains 400 calories per cup:
180 ÷ 400 = 0.45 cup per day
That is slightly less than ½ cup of food daily.
When feeding two meals per day, divide the amount equally:
0.45 ÷ 2 = 0.225 cup per meal
Each meal would contain slightly less than ¼ cup.
Remember that treats, dental chews, training rewards, toppers, and table scraps also add calories. They should not be ignored when calculating the total daily intake.
Why Measuring a Yorkie’s Food Matters
A difference of one or two tablespoons may not seem important to us. For a dog that weighs only four or five pounds, however, that difference can represent a significant percentage of the daily calorie allowance.
Using a standard measuring cup is better than estimating by eye. A kitchen scale is even more accurate because it allows you to measure the food in grams.
Check whether the dog food package provides a gram-based feeding guide. Weighing each meal can be particularly helpful when:
- Your Yorkie needs to lose weight
- Your Yorkie gains weight easily
- Several people feed the dog
- You use kibble as a training reward
- You combine wet and dry food
- Your dog is exceptionally small
One practical method is to measure the entire day’s food in the morning and place it in a separate container. Use food from that container for meals and training. That’s how I do it when feeding my dog. When the container is empty, your Yorkie has received the full daily amount.
Yorkie Feeding Schedule by Age
A consistent Yorkie feeding schedule supports digestion, portion control, house-training, and appetite monitoring.
Scheduled meals also help you notice quickly when your Yorkie suddenly refuses food.

Yorkie Feeding Schedule at 8 to 12 Weeks
A young Yorkie puppy has a very small stomach and normally needs four small meals per day.
A sample schedule may look like this:
- 7:00 a.m. — Breakfast
- 11:00 a.m. — Second meal
- 3:00 p.m. — Third meal
- 7:00 p.m. — Dinner
Divide the puppy’s total daily portion between all four meals. Do not serve the full daily allowance at each feeding.
Very young and exceptionally small Yorkie puppies can be vulnerable to low blood sugar. Ask the breeder what food and feeding routine the puppy followed before coming home. Continue that routine initially unless your veterinarian recommends a change.

Yorkie Feeding Schedule at 3 to 6 Months
Most Yorkie puppies between three and six months old do well with three meals per day.
A suitable schedule could be:
- 7:00 a.m. — Breakfast
- 1:00 p.m. — Lunch
- 7:00 p.m. — Dinner
Continue using complete and balanced puppy food formulated for growth. Small-breed puppy food usually has smaller pieces that are easier for a Yorkie puppy to chew.
Monitor your puppy’s body condition and weight gain. Do not increase the portion only because the puppy begs between meals.
Yorkies are observant dogs. They quickly learn which family member is most likely to provide an extra snack.
Yorkie Feeding Schedule at 6 to 12 Months
Between six and twelve months, many Yorkies gradually transition to two meals per day.
Exceptionally small puppies may continue eating three meals for longer. Your veterinarian can help determine when your puppy is ready for fewer meals.
When reducing meal frequency, keep the total daily amount the same at first.
For example, a puppy eating ½ cup per day across three meals should still receive ½ cup after moving to two meals. The food would simply be divided into two ¼-cup portions.
Do not reduce the number of meals and the total daily food amount at the same time.

Adult Yorkie Feeding Schedule
Most healthy adult Yorkies do well with two measured meals per day, served approximately eight to twelve hours apart.
A simple adult Yorkie feeding routine could be:
- 7:30 a.m. — Half of the daily food allowance
- During the day — Small training rewards from the daily allowance
- 6:30 p.m. — The remaining food allowance
Two scheduled meals make it easier to:
- Control the total calorie intake
- Monitor appetite
- Plan walks and potty breaks
- Notice digestive changes
- Prevent accidental overfeeding
- Coordinate feeding between family members
Free feeding means leaving food available throughout the day. Although some dogs regulate their intake successfully, this method makes it harder to know how much your Yorkie has eaten.
It can also hide an early loss of appetite.
Senior Yorkie Feeding Schedule
Most senior Yorkies can continue eating twice per day. Some older dogs prefer three smaller meals, especially if they have a sensitive stomach, reduced appetite, or difficulty eating a larger portion.
Aging does not automatically mean that a Yorkie should eat less.
An inactive senior Yorkie may need fewer calories. However, an older dog that is losing muscle or struggling to maintain weight may need a more calorie-dense diet.
Sudden weight loss, difficulty chewing, persistent refusal of food, or a major appetite change should be discussed with a veterinarian.
A Personal Note From Our Yorkie Feeding Routine
One small detail can make a big difference during mealtime.
In our home, we use two small ceramic bowls that are approximately four inches in diameter—one for food and one for water. Their shallow shape is easier for a tiny Yorkie to reach, while the additional weight helps prevent an excited pup from moving or tipping the bowl.
This may sound like a minor detail, but a stable feeding area makes it easier to see how much food has actually been eaten. It also reduces the number of kibble pieces scattered around the floor.
Our experience is one reason we recommend choosing shallow bowls with a non-slip or weighted base for toy breeds. You can find additional advice in our Yorkie puppy supplies checklist.

How Much Should a Yorkie Puppy Eat?
A Yorkie puppy’s food requirements depend on:
- Current weight
- Age
- Expected adult size
- Growth rate
- Food type
- Calories per cup
- Activity level
- Overall health
Puppies require food formulated for growth. Adult maintenance food may not provide the right balance of energy and nutrients for a growing Yorkie.
Use the feeding chart on the puppy food package as the primary starting point. Many manufacturers provide recommendations based on age and expected adult weight.
Divide the total daily amount into:
- Four meals for puppies from 8 to 12 weeks
- Three meals for puppies from 3 to 6 months
- Two or three meals for puppies from 6 to 12 months
Weigh your puppy regularly. Your veterinarian can confirm whether the puppy is growing at a healthy rate.
How Much Should a Teacup Yorkie Eat?
“Teacup Yorkie” is a commonly used term for an unusually small Yorkshire Terrier. These tiny dogs may need much smaller portions than an average-sized Yorkie.
A very small adult Yorkie may require only around 90 to 140 calories per day. Depending on the food, that may equal less than ⅓ cup of kibble.
However, feeding a tiny Yorkie is not simply a matter of making every meal smaller. Very young or exceptionally small puppies may need frequent meals because their stomachs cannot hold much food at once.
When feeding a very small Yorkie:
- Offer meals at consistent times
- Measure every portion
- Avoid long gaps between puppy meals
- Make diet changes gradually
- Monitor body weight frequently
- Keep fresh water available
- Make sure every family member follows the same schedule
Contact a veterinarian promptly if a puppy becomes weak, shaky, unusually sleepy, disoriented, or unwilling to eat.
Dry Food, Wet Food, or Homemade Yorkie Food?
The best Yorkie food should provide complete and balanced nutrition for the dog’s life stage.
Dry Food for Yorkies
Dry food is convenient, easy to store, and simple to measure.
Small-breed formulas often contain a relatively high number of calories in a small volume. Always check the calorie content before deciding how many cups your Yorkie should eat.
Do not continue using the same scoop automatically after changing food brands. The new formula may contain more or fewer calories per cup.
Wet Food for Yorkies
Wet food contains more moisture and may be easier to eat for Yorkies with dental discomfort or chewing difficulties.
Calculate the portion using calories per can, tray, or pouch. Do not compare wet and dry food by volume alone because their water and calorie content can be very different.
Mixed Feeding
When combining wet and dry food, reduce both portions.
A common feeding mistake is serving the full recommended dry-food portion and then adding wet food as a topper. Unless the kibble is reduced, the topper creates additional calories.
For example, suppose your Yorkie needs 180 calories daily:
- 130 calories could come from dry food
- 50 calories could come from wet food
The combined total should remain close to 180 calories.
Homemade Food for Yorkies
Homemade food gives owners greater control over ingredients. However, chicken, rice, meat, and vegetables do not automatically create a complete and balanced diet.
A long-term homemade Yorkie diet should be formulated or reviewed by a veterinarian or qualified veterinary nutrition specialist.
Our guide to the best homemade food for Yorkies includes meal ideas and Yorkie-friendly ingredients.
How Many Treats Can a Yorkie Have?
Treats should generally provide no more than around 10% of a dog’s daily calories. The remaining calories should come from complete and balanced food. WSAVA provides nutritional tools that help owners assess treats, calorie intake, body condition, and food selection.
For a Yorkie eating 180 calories per day, treats should provide no more than approximately 18 calories.
This limit can be reached quickly. One treat made for a medium-sized dog may contain a large part of a Yorkie’s daily treat allowance.
To prevent accidental overfeeding:
- Break treats into tiny pieces
- Use kibble for training
- Count dental chews as treats
- Measure food placed inside puzzle toys
- Avoid repeatedly sharing table food
- Keep one daily treat container for the household
Before sharing human food, read our guides to foods Yorkshire Terriers can eat and foods Yorkies should avoid.
How Much Should a Yorkie Eat Per Day?
A three-pound adult Yorkie may eat around ¼ to ⅓ cup of dry food daily, while an eight-pound Yorkie may need around ⅔ to ¾ cup when the food contains approximately 400 calories per cup. Puppies need three to four small meals, and most adults need two. Measure every portion, count treat calories, check the dog food label, and adjust the amount according to your Yorkie’s weight and body condition.
